FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions)
-
How did the idea for Ghetto Zombies come about?
The idea for Ghetto Zombies sparked from a conversation about how we missed seeing Brazilian identity represented in games. From there, we began to flesh out the universe, gameplay, and identity. Zombies are a staple of urban fantasy narratives, but we wanted to flip the typical horror associated with them into something wacky and creative, taking the concept in a whole new direction.

-
What was the process for choosing the art style and theme?
The characters and visuals emerged naturally as the idea matured. From the start, we wanted a game with a strong Hip-Hop culture vibe seen in the clothing styles, the graffiti mechanics, and the music. It is a fantastical interpretation of urban elements we see in our daily lives, such as the personalities of the people we live with and the music we hear on every corner.

It has always been the team's intention to create an atmosphere that is lively, colorful, fun, and lighthearted, without losing our social consciousness as residents of the "periferia" (outskirts). This was the thread that connected the game's aesthetics and concept as a whole, both in the narrative and the world-building.
-
Which Engine is used to develop GZ?
Ghetto Zombies is developed using GameMaker Studio, an engine with an extensive portfolio of successful indie titles. The project has evolved alongside the engine, transitioning through several version updates, which allowed us to implement many new features that surfaced during development. The engine's representatives maintain constant contact with us to help promote the game it’s always great to work with them.
-
What are the influences for Ghetto Zombies?
GZ draws inspiration from top-down shooters that are icons in the indie scene, such as Enter The Gungeon (for its weapon variety and comedic tone) and Atomicrops (for its modern pixel art and fun, chaotic atmosphere). People often associate Ghetto with the classic "Zombies Ate My Neighbors," a game we absolutely love. Locally, our biggest Brazilian reference is Relic Hunters; its gameplay and the mechanical variation of its weapons are simply incredible.

-
How long has Ghetto Zombies been in development?
That’s a tough one to answer because it hasn’t been a "continuous line" the process was interrupted a few times. The game actually went through three major overhauls (in both art and code) where it was literally rebuilt from scratch. However, the work first began in 2020, so we can say this IP has been in development for 5 years.
-
Where does the investment for the game come from?
Ghetto Zombies is mostly funded by public grants (PROAC 2022 and SPCine LPG 2023), and it has also participated in incubators like Sampa Games (formerly VaiTec Games) by the São Paulo city government. The project also receives investment from ID@Xbox, Xbox’s support fund for indie projects, which was of vital importance and allowed the game to be developed over several years.

-
Will the game have a sequel?
We certainly hope so! However, we don’t know about potential sequels just yet, as it depends heavily on the public's reception. Many ideas we had for the game had to be cut from the final version, and we would love to apply them in a future continuation. Right now, we are focusing on a 6-month support and update period post-launch. We’ll only be able to decide on the future of the franchise after that period.
